THE STORY
Through consultations hosted during the last 15 years by The New York City Leadership Center (and Concerts of Prayer Greater New York) for more than 10,000 leaders from 50 cities, we find that cities all over the U.S. face many of the same spiritual and social issues. These include vast populations unreached by the Gospel, profound poverty, and an emerging youth population struggling to surpass the 50% high school graduation rate.
To address these issues, we hosted the inaugural Movement Day in September 2010, in conjunction with Redeemer City to City, for urban ministry and movement leaders in NYC and beyond. The event was a significant success, with over 800 attendees from 34 cities and 14 nations. More than 1,000 leaders attended the second annual Movement Day in September 2011, which included a special track designed specifically for Marketplace Leaders.
Movement Day seeks to refine and perpetuate a credible, effective model of holistic urban ministry that leaders can adapt all over the country. Plenary sessions have featured presentations from Ray Bakke, A.R. Bernard, Bill Hybels, Timothy Keller, Erwin McManus and Brenda Salter-McNeil on Gospel Movements and catalytic leadership. Afternoon Learning Tracks focused on gathering practitioners of a particular type of urban ministry (e.g. church planting, urban compassion, urban youth and six other topics) to share best practices and to foster collaboration.
Our Mission is to Cultivate Gospel Movements in Cities by:
- Facilitating unity and collaboration amongst Christian leaders to address today’s urban issues;
- Fostering an environment where City Networks are strengthened; and
- Inspiring and challenging Catalytic Leaders to maximize their leadership potential.
Movement Day is catalyzing leadership teams from America’s largest cities to serve their cities more effectively by advancing high-level, city-changing collaborative partnerships.
