Renewing Cities Through Church Multiplication Movements

“A major religious shift is taking place in the United States, specifically as people of other religions are becoming our neighbors. The population growth in the world’s cities has exploded: since the year 2000, more than 50% of the earth’s population (numbering six billion) has been living in cities.” Ray Bakke, Chancellor, Bakke Graduate University

The majority of Americans live in America’s 40 largest cities. There has been a huge influx of immigrants that have migrated to our cities. “The only way to increase the number and percentage of Christians in a city is to plant thousands of new churches. The only way to change the culture of a city is to increase the number of churches engaged in it.” Tim Keller, Senior Pastor, Redeemer Presbyterian Church

There is a great need for hundreds of culturally relevant, Gospel-centered churches to be planted in North American cities. The opportunity to ignite and cultivate church multiplication movements in cities has never been greater. The goal of this track is to ignite and cultivate church multiplication movements in North American cities.

In 2008 Ellis Prince, his wife and two children moved to Baltimore, MD in partnership with the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention to plant the Gallery Church. In the last three years the church has grown from four people to a gathering of more than 300 people at two sites across ethnic and economic lines. The Gallery Church is known in the city as a place where the people love God, love each other, and love being a neighbor. The Gallery is learning how to share the Gospel through living obedient lives of thankfulness for the grace we have received. The church has led initiatives to improve schools and parks and has engaged the medical community to set state and national records in testing and linkages to care for people living with HIV/Aids. Ellis Prince was born in Tampa, FL, yet was raised in Maryland. He is a graduate of Liberty University and served the Church as a youth pastor for 15 years prior to becoming a church planter. He has learned how difficult it is to engage skeptical people and the challenges pastors face when trying to shepherd people of different economic and ethnic backgrounds.
